Clearing Out Your Home To Let In More Money

Blogger Shalee Rae The Thought Chapter Clearing out your home.jpg

Can clearing out your home let more money into your life? A quick story about me, I didn’t work for over 2 years due to health issues. In that time, I sold second-hand, home and clothing items to make ends meet. My house quickly become a breeding ground for not only my second hand bits and bobs but other people would give me their second hand items to sell too. Truthfully I did sell some of it but mostly the items just sat around my home collecting dust.

I slowly began to let go of the idea of selling second hand items to make money. It wasn’t worth dealing with the no-shows, the online abusers and the people who wanted something for nothing. It took up not only my time but space in my home. I cut down on selling when I starting working again but the habit of hanging on to things to sell stayed with me (and is still something I am working on).

I experienced a huge change in my home at the beginning of this year when I read Marie Kondo’s ‘The Life Changing Art of Tidying up”. My boyfriend and I filled a whole car load of rubbish and donation items after reading this. It was really hard but I eventually threw away the huge pile of items I had in my back room that I was going to "sell".

I have continued the habit of clearing out an area of my home when I am feeling stuck or when I want to bring something into my life. If I need money to pay a bill, I will now tackle a room of my home and throw out EVERYTHING I no longer want or use. Here is why I believe that clearing out your home can let more money into your life.

Every item in your home requires maintenance: Think about it. Everything you own will need to be washed or mended at some point. The less you have the less maintenance you will need to perform and the more time you will have to work on your business or novel or to spend time with loved ones. Maybe you could have a luxurious soak in the tub instead of mending the bike chain on the bike you never ride.

Items in your home are energetically blocking you: Maybe that dream job or that new friend hasn’t come into your life yet because your life is simply too full of things. I love to envision when I am throwing something away, I am opening up space for some new, cool experience to come into my life. That experience could be getting paid for writing blog posts for a careers website (yes that has happened to me).

Items are representing the past that you are hanging on to: Items in the home are often gifts or items of a passed on loved one or someone that is not in our lives anymore. While I understand it is hard to let go of the past, think of it like this. You throw something away that you have been hanging onto for years. It was hard but you did it and you have let go of a memory or a pain. You are now a stronger person and you have more energy to tackle another problem you would like to fix in your life. Maybe that problem is asking for a pay rise? Boom, more money.

Quick tips for clearing:

Donate the items you want to sell.

Take pictures of your memory items and upload them into google drive.

Take pictures or receipts, blood tests and any other documents to upload into google drive.

Avoid putting things where you can’t see them. The things at the back of cupboards and closets never get used, trust me.

For every item, you buy, throw an item away.

Get used to the discomfort of throwing away things (even if they cost you money) that you no longer want or use.

Throw away or donate the items you think a family member will want.

Put items you are going to throw away or donate straight into the car so they don’t stay in the home.

Throw away items that are in your “to be fixed or mended” pile. If you haven’t done it yet you never will.

Throw away items you can easily get at your local supermarket or store. It is better sitting on their shelves than yours.

Throw away items that don’t fit you or are for “future” you.

Throw away items for your future garage sale. If you are having a garage sale in 6 months, you will probably have more things to sell by then.

It’s a bit morbid, but remember these things are not going to the grave with you. The items you owned in your life isn’t going to be written on your tombstone.

Create folders in your email account and clear out all of your emails or put them into folders.

Thank-you for showing up and reading my blog post on clearing out your home to let in more money. I would love you to let me know which of these tips you are going to use and please send me pictures of your newly cleared out spaces.

Until next time, remember to stay committed to your wellness.
