30 Things I Want To Do Before I Turn 30

Shalee The Thought Chapter Blog 30 Before 30 Life.jpg

In just over 4-months time, I am turning 30..years…old. Now I am not opposed to ageing, in fact, I rather embrace it. I just find it funny that through all of the shit I thought I would never make it through, here I am, and with the emotional maturity to look at my experiences in a completely different way. And because of this, I really did want to figure out a way to signify this new decade in a way that suits me.

The idea of throwing a huge party makes me want to throw up. I don’t really drink and as a New Years Day baby I have long realised that this day is mostly a let down (in fact, I had a belief for a long time that my birthday was cursed but I am trying to rephrase this belief). It’s a strange birthday to have. Everyone around you is drunk or hungover, a lot of people are away on holidays, and people make wild claims about all of the things that they are going to do differently the next year. All in all the count down to the new year has always been strange to me and so I’d rather just not go there when it comes to trying to plan sometimes.

So instead, I wanted to do something a little different. After watching a video created by Yes Theory where Amar simulates his last 24-hours to live for his birthday, I knew I wanted to do something along these lines. And so, I decided to create a list of 30 things that I would like to do before I turn 30. All of the things I have chosen are things that I have thought about doing but have never gotten around to or I have let fear get in the way of. And so, I hope to take you along with my little experiment, please follow me on Instagram to keep up to date or sign up to my newsletter, and I hope you enjoy.

  1. Visit an ashram: Like so many others, I have felt intrigued to do this after reading Eat Pray Love and while I have experimented with meditation and chanting before, I’ve never had the balls to actually take myself to one.

  2. Track my family tree: Like all families, mine is complex and I want to dive right in there. I want to understand more about my parents and I believe a great way to do this is to learn more about their parents. I am also curious to learn about what areas of Europe we came from, and who knows, maybe I can visit these areas one day.

  3. Ride a horse: I am TERRIFIED of riding horses. I am not even sure if they like people riding them but this is something that I would like to learn more about and is a fear I would like to squash.

  4. Attend a rave sober: I have attended many raves in my time and while I loved the freedom and dancing, these is typically the type of thing that I used to do completely wasted and so I have a lot of negative associations. I would like to create some new, positive ones.

  5. Jump into water: As a teen, I jumped off every single pier I came across, it didn’t matter if I had swim clothes with me or not. This is now the type of thing that my adult mind tells me “no, no don’t be silly”. And so, this is one for my teenage self.

  6. Write a short book

  7. Record a song: I have written several songs that have been floating around in my mind for years that I finally want

  8. Flight simulator: My biggest fear, gulp, is flying, which means that I haven’t travelled for a really long time (not the only reason why but it is a reason). I thought this could be a great baby step to walk towards my ultimate goal.

  9. Give back in some way: Certain things have happened in my life because of unlikely mentors along the way. I want to be able to give back to a young person in one way or another.

  10. Take a solo trip: I have NEVER done this. I have always been too worried about what my boyfriends have been up to rather than going out and doing things on my own.

  11. Lose 10kg: I know I am supposed to love my body the way it is but I love feeling fit and I have experienced some intense joint pain over the last few years so I want to safely lose 10kg (no starving myself etc.)

  12. Make a new friend: I have spent the last 6-years completing a degree and dealing with some health blocks. While I have always had lots of family around me, I have let my personal relationships slide and life is just no fun without mates to share it with.

  13. Take a dance class: I grew up dancing and gave this up as an adult. I miss it all the time but I can never justify the money or I feel like I am too fat or not fit enough to do this. Time to change.

  14. See an integrative GP: I still have some niggly ailments that I would like to nip in the bud so I want to make sure that I am doing everything I possibly can in order to achieve this.

  15. Move houses: We live on the loudest street in history. Even though the idea of moving terrifies me (especially coming up with the bond and first month’s rent) I am really for a peaceful environment.

  16. Attend a healing/personal development seminar: I want to commit my life to ever changing and growing, so even though these types of things are often expensive, I want to put my money where my heart is.

  17. Attend a Yin yoga class: The last time I did this I had a panic attack for the WHOLE session. I need to try to this again.

  18. Visit a cat cafe: Because cats are the best duh!

  19. Taking a walking tour in Melbourne: I’ve already done this but I learned so much about Melbourne last time and had so much fun that I really want to do this again.

  20. Have a bon fire: I’m a bush kid at heart. I love the city so much but this needs to happen.

  21. Ride on the back of a motorbike: As every single festival I attended as a kid I would pay to get on the back of a Motorbike (I don’t know if this is still a thing now?) as I have gotten older these types of things seem “unsafe” and I so I don’t do them. It’s time to change that attitude I think.

  22. Rock climb: When I was a kid my Dad would take my brother and I rock climbing at the Dog Rocks (I think in Harcourt). I have since let my fear of heights get to me so this seems like the perfect thing to try.

  23. Tell all of the people in my life something I like and appreciate them and what they have done for me: Self explanatory.

  24. Drive a wild buggy: I just want to get mud everywhere!

  25. Take a vline somewhere: While I have worked on my fear of trains over the years, this still isn’t the most comfortable thing for me and yet I love the idea of taking a vline somewhere random.

  26. Walk a red carpet: Despite what some may think, I am shy. I want to strut down a red carpet even just once and pretend I’m the most confident person in the world.

  27. Do a smash room: I just want to let out some pent up anger ha-ha

  28. Attend a meet up: This is also something I have done before and dang are they awkward. Again, I have a negative association to this type of thing so I want to give it another shot.

  29. Eat at a fancy restaurant: This is easy, I love food. I want to see if fine dining is actually any better than the affordable asian food that I love so much ha-ha.

  30. Spend an evening next to the ocean: One of my favourite memories is when my brother booked a cabin as a birthday gift for me as Hydeaway beach. There had recently been a hurricane and the resort forgot to call us to cancel and so when we rocked up after such a long drive, they didn’t want to turn us away. Not only did we have the whole beach to ourselves I woke up in the morning listening to the waves hit the sand. It was MAGICAL and I am in desperate need for some ocean magic again.

So what do you think of this list? Is there anything you would also try or add? I would love to hear from you.
