Banana-Choc Super Smoothie
In the past, I have tried different smoothies, and well, they have been lacking in taste. I know blended kale and cucumber is good for me, but I would rather not be picking greens out of my teeth all day thank-you very much.
Before I started having my Banana-Choc Super Smoothie I wasn't much of a breakfast person (or a morning person for that matter). I always had an upset stomach in the morning, so I would opt for some black coffee and sometimes not eat until 3 pm. I know fasting is all the rage these days, but a smoothie for breakfast has not only helped me feel better but has helped set my body clock.
Without further ado, here is my Banana-Choc Super Smoothie
THE BASICS
2 Cups of Almond Milk/Coconut Milk
*Tip 1 - Make sure you get almond milk without added sugar and the additive carrageenan as some research has found it can lead to digestive issues
*Tip 2 - Make your own almond milk. All you need is a fine strainer, almonds, water, a blender and a container for your milk
1 Frozen Banana (*Tip 1 - cut your banana up before you put it in the freezer, so it is easier on your blender) (*Tip 2 - I have found I am sensitive to ripe bananas. The browner the better I say)
1 Teaspoon of Natural Almond Butter
1 Teaspoon of Cacao
1 Teaspoon of Mesquite Powder
SUBSTITUTES
Milk - I love my mixture of almond and coconut but there is a magnitude of vegan milks out there to try. There is hemp, rice, banana, macadamia oat and even quinoa!
Banana - Taste wise, I have found banana works the best, but you could try shredded coconut, avocado or even an orange (choc-orange mmmm).
Almond Butter โ Peanut butter works great for this recipe, but peanuts are known to be high in mold. Any nut butter can be used, or you get experimental and try ghee or avocado.
Cacao - For those that are cacao sensitive could try carob powder.
Mesquite Powder - I find that mesquite tastes the best, but I often substitute it with maca powder which can be a little easier to find in grocery stores.
Other options โ Add whatever you want! You could add cinnamon to balance blood sugar, hemp seeds for protein or even coffee nibs as a topper. If you are brave enough, you could even blend your daily supplements in there (god I love my blender)
