At my last visit to the Naturopath, I learned a fun new fact. My body was extremely acidic. In fact, my specialist exclaimed that he had never seen someone so acidic in 20 years of practice. I wasn’t surprised. I had just spent Christmas and New Year’s covered head to toe in hives, unable to keep down any food and with my joints ceasing up to the point where I couldn’t walk.

The prognosis? No-one knows. My blood test revealed I had inflammation and my liver was suffering, all of which slowly went back to normal. The only explanation I received was that it was a bad virus that might take 6 months or so to recover from. I was sent off to two different allergy clinics where they both refused to test me for allergies. Feeling frustrated I took matters into my own hands and saw a Naturopath (and chiro, and kinesiologist, and massage specialist and energy healer, but that is another story).

So here I was, peeing into a cup and been told that I was extremely acidic. But what the hell did that mean? I learned that our bodies have something called a PH level (potential of hydrogen level) which ranges on a scale from 0-14. The theory is that the human body thrives at a range of 7.4 (and I was just hitting 5). This, of course, is a controversial topic (like everything to do with health) because doctors do not recognise this, and many believe that changing your urine’s PH level is only changing the PH level of the urine, and does nothing to the body. But, as a desperate lady and an experimenter at heart, I thought I would give it a crack.

I was advised to only eat raw salads, to avoid meat, to drink green juice three times a day and to drink something called “Basica” twice a day. Um no! Of course, I wanted to get better, but seriously. I had to figure out a way to become more alkaline without completely throwing my life into disarray. So, I ordered some litmus strips on eBay to test my own levels and I did some research. One of the simplest ways I found was to make my water more alkaline. I already carry my water bottle around with me everywhere, so this was perfect! Here are some tips I recommend to turning your regular water into alkaline healing water.

DRINK FILTERED WATER

In Melbourne where I live, water from the tap contains things like chlorine & fluoride which are acidic (you can read more HERE). While properties are added to correct PH levels it is unknown how much acidity is still coming through our taps. I use a simple jug filter to remove acidic properties from my tap water.

ADD LEMON +/OR LIME

You could assume that lemon and lime are acidic due to their zesty nature, but they actually become alkaline in the body after consumption. A super easy way to make your water more alkaline and healing is to add lemon or lime (or hey both).

BICARB SODA + MOLASSES

Bicarb Soda is extremely alkaline & many drink a teaspoon of it with water within an hour of eating as the body needs some acidity to digest food. Many who are healing themselves from cancer mix 1 teaspoon of bicarb & one teaspoon of molasses with water to increase needed minerals & alkalinity (read more HERE, HERE & HERE)

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

Okay, we all know ACV tastes awesome (hehe) but unlike other vinegars it is alkaline forming in the body. Pop some in hot or cool water and get your healing on. (Read all about ACV benefits HERE).

HIMALAYAN SEA-SALT

Himalayan sea-salt differs from regular salt as it contains more minerals which help alkalinity. Sea-salt can re-introduce minerals into your water after it has gone through the filtration process. I sprinkle a little into my water and some say that Himalayan sea-salt naturally balances the body’s PH levels.

BASICA

This is the supplement recommended to me by the naturopath and it chock full of minerals. While it’s a bit on the pricey side, these helped improved my levels within a couple of days. I was advised the I may need to take this for 6 months, but it is really up to you, your budget and your body.

6 months after visiting the naturopath I still check my PH levels every now and again. I notice if I take medication it gets worse, and if I am not incorporating enough greens. While I wish I could give you more scientific evidence, all I can say is that I feel better and more hydrated when I am more alkaline, and I have only had one attack of hives since that lovely summer. Overall, I recommend trying it for yourself and see how you feel.
