Natural Dental Care

Cleaning our toothy pegs is important, and having a lovely white smile can do wonders for our confidence levels. But when living a conscious life, it is vital to consider what we are putting in our mouths (insert dirty joke here). Without proper dental hygiene, bacteria can overgrow in our mouth and lead to infections or even gum disease. But there are holistic approaches you can take. You don’t have to use mainstream products if you don’t feel comfortable, so here are some quick tips to implement a natural dental practice into your life.

CONSIDER PUTTING ASIDE FLUORIDE

In Australian, Fluoride is added to water and can be found in common toothpaste brands. Contrary to previous beliefs, research has found that fluoride can be quite damaging to the body (Read more HERE). You can try herbal toothpaste instead or simply make your own at home with bicarb soda, peppermint oil, and coconut oil. There are even natural alternatives to regular dental floss.

OIL-PULLING

Oil-pulling is an Ayurveda practice which involves swishing edible oil in your mouth for approximately twenty minutes a day. I personally use coconut oil (because I already use it for just about everything else) but other oils can be used like sesame. Claims are that oil-pulling can improve dental health and general health as well (A study can be found HERE and some more general reading HERE).

SWAP BLEACH FOR CHARCOAL

I regularly brush my teeth with activated charcoal and find this almost instantly removes yellow stains. I was one of the clever youths who drank too much alcohol and vomited almost every weekend (classy) and this burned away the protective layer on my teeth. Since then my teeth have been very yellow and I have tried almost every bleach treatment out to whiten them. I just found that bleach made my gums sensitive and did not whiten my teeth at all. Some believe that charcoal isn’t good for your teeth because it is abrasive, so I would recommend a very gentle brush. (You can read more HERE).

What is your current dental regime? Are you going to implement any of the tips above? Let me know in the comments below and let’s start a loving conversation.

Much love,
